In 1942, Henan Province experienced a catastrophic famine, one of the worst in modern Chinese history, leading to the deaths of over three million people, including men, women, and children. While a severe drought was the main trigger for the famine, its impact was worsened by locust infestations, windstorms, earthquakes, outbreaks of disease, and the corrupt practices of the ruling Kuomintang government.
