The Watsons Go to Birmingham

In the summer of 1963, the Watson family, who are very close, reside in Flint, Michigan. When 15-year-old Byron’s behavior becomes too much to handle, his parents decide it’s time for a change and opt for Grandma Sands’ strict discipline in Birmingham, Alabama. The Watsons pack their 1948 Plymouth Brown Bomber and journey south. Upon arriving in Birmingham, they are introduced to Grandma Sands and her companion, Mr. Robert, and quickly realize that life there is quite different from Flint. That pivotal summer, the Watsons become involved in events far more significant than Byron’s mischief—events that will transform their lives and the nation forever.
