Inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Jin Ping Mei” from the Ming Dynasty, this film adaptation explores themes of power and desire. The original novel is notable for being the first comprehensive Chinese literary work to portray sexuality in a detailed way. Set between the years 1111 and 1127, the story follows Ximen Qing, a morally dubious and ambitious merchant whose wealth allows him to maintain a household filled with multiple wives and concubines.
