A simple can of ravioli sets off an extraordinary 30,000-kilometer journey across eight countries, exploring every stage of food production and the distant origins of global ingredients. This dream-like expedition offers glimpses into unsettling truths, starting with a single mother working in one of Brazil’s largest open-pit mines and concluding on a grocery store shelf in Finland. Throughout the journey, the laborers who mine, cultivate, and harvest each component share their aspirations and dreams, such as a Danish pig farmer who cherishes his sows but yearns for a romantic partner, and a Portuguese tomato picker who hopes to stay healthy long enough to fund her daughters’ university education. With stunning visuals and remarkable sound design, the film delivers a powerful commentary on our modern, interconnected world, highlighting the countless unseen individuals who prepare the food we consume daily. -Gisèle Gordon (HotDocs.ca)
