Confined to a dismal and cramped cell in a dreadful Soviet prison, a fatigued new prisoner grapples with adjusting to his harsh surroundings. Inside the bleak enclosure, an unfriendly cellmate warns him against touching the enigmatic red wooden box placed on the lower bunk, and especially against opening it. What is the reason for such secrecy surrounding the box’s contents? Might it hold the key to his freedom?
