Pelican Dreams

Acclaimed filmmaker Judy Irving, known for her Sundance and Emmy Award-winning work, returns with her first project since the beloved “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.” In this film, she tracks the journey of a wandering California brown pelican, starting with its “arrest” on the Golden Gate Bridge and subsequent care at a wildlife rehabilitation center. The narrative then delves into the pelicans’ nesting sites, their migration along the Pacific coast, and the survival challenges faced by these ancient creatures, often called flying dinosaurs. The film, titled “PELICAN DREAMS,” explores themes of wildness and poses questions about our relationship with wild animals: How close can we approach them without causing harm or domestication? Why is wildness essential in our lives, and how can we safeguard it? The film features “Gigi” (named for the Golden Gate) and Morro, a backyard pelican with a wounded wing.
