Little Sister
In October 2008, a young nun named Colleen has been avoiding her family until she receives an email from her mother stating, “Your brother is home.” Upon returning to her childhood residence in Asheville, NC, she discovers her old room unchanged, still painted black and adorned with goth and metal posters. While her parents are pleased to see her, there is a palpable sense of discomfort and awkwardness. Her brother, who has become a recluse in the guesthouse after coming back from the Iraq war, adds to the tension. Throughout Colleen’s stay, emotions fluctuate, aided by Halloween festivities, pot-infused cupcakes, and the band GWAR. “Little Sister” is a poignant comedy about family, offering a heartfelt yet unsentimental experience that resonates with the inner goth in all of us.
