Paul and Agnes have been dating for some time, and Agnes is taken aback when she discovers that Paul prefers to live with two roommates on campus rather than move in with her. Upon meeting one of his roommates, Louis-Anault, Paul begins to act differently, feeling an attraction to Louis that he doesn’t fully understand. Agnes becomes envious and proposes a wager: the first to win over Louis-Anault will prevail. If she succeeds, Paul will abandon his exploration of his homosexual feelings; if Paul succeeds, she will leave him. During this time, Paul encounters Mecir, a young Arab laborer, who opens his eyes to a world beyond prestigious universities.
