In 1966, bachelor David’s hopes for a quiet Christmas are disrupted when his neighbor, Stephanie, reveals she won a competition to host Tommy Saunders’ Christmas Eve TV special live from her home, but mistakenly used David’s address. Fast forward to 1981, John and Lizzie discover that this will be their final Christmas on Cherry Lane after John is offered a job in Michigan and Lizzie learns she is expecting a baby.
