In his final semester of law school, privileged and affluent Whitt Sheffield is tasked by a professor to represent a young single mother in her quest to secure and maintain employment. Whitt, whose elitist father expects him to pursue a career in corporate law, feels demeaned by this assignment, especially after meeting Kylie Burch, the woman he is supposed to assist. Initially, Whitt and Kylie are at odds, and it seems unlikely that Whitt will be able to aid her without grasping her circumstances. However, when the stability of Kylie and her son’s family life is suddenly jeopardized, Whitt realizes that he and Kylie might share more in common than he initially thought.
