Across the Line

In the National Hockey League, only about thirty out of six hundred players are Black. Mattie Slaughter, a hockey prodigy from the rural Black community of North Preston, aspires to become the thirty-first. To achieve this dream, Mattie must stay out of trouble, which is challenging given the pervasive racism at his school, his older brother’s involvement in hustling, and his feelings for a girl who is already in a relationship.
